DG Sailings During Christmas Period

Between Sunday the 17th of December 2023 and Monday 8 January 2024 – our Cook Strait Ferry service provider will NOT be operating their dedicated, freight only services. All services will be a combination of passenger/ non-commercial vehicles and trucks. This is due to the high demand created by tourists and NZ residents traveling across The Cook Strait for Christmas/ New Year.

Question - What does this mean for PBT and our clients.

Answer – It means that any class of DG that cannot sail on a passenger sailing will NOT be able to move across Cook Strait between the dates mentioned above.

Question – What classes of DG’s can or can’t travel on passenger sailings?

Answer – Due to the complexities of shipping DGs and the rule variances between Road and Maritime transportation PBT is not able to make a list available. However, based on experience, please adopt the following as a generalised guideline –

  • All class 9 and DGLQs can travel on passenger services.

PBT strongly recommends that if you have a requirement to move DG consignments in December that you plan well ahead and move your freight much earlier than the cut-off dates noted above. Space is at a premium during the busy peak period, and it is common that there is less space on the ferries than there is freight to move.
